TAPAS (discipline, austerity or burning enthusiasm)

The third of the Niyamas. Tapas, also known as 'discipline' or 'austerity,' is a vital concept that directs us toward fostering self-control, inner strength and the vehicle that helps us grow and transform.

This principle is an essential precursor to achieving a positive relationship with ourselves, an important foundation for forming meaningful and enduring connections with others.

I believe Tapas to be linked to our habitual behaviour, as it encourages us to cultivate self-discipline through consistent and deliberate actions. By repeatedly practising austerity and making conscious choices aligned with our goals, we transform these actions into ingrained habits, which ultimately lead to a more disciplined way of living so that we can become the person we want to become.

In each yoga pose, we can choose to hold them with intention, embracing the discomfort and challenges with equanimity, mirroring the Tapas principle of austerity.

By maintaining focus on our breath and alignment, we train ourselves to remain present and disciplined in our practice, fostering mental resilience and self-control.

As we cultivate this habit of mindful dedication on the mat, we not only strengthen our bodies but also cultivate a deeper understanding of Tapas that extends beyond yoga, influencing how we approach challenges and discipline in our daily lives.

“The second step to achieving your goals in the New Year involves action and this is where many people run off track. The life we are living and have known to this point is comfortable and easy. Therefore we find it hard to establish new habits and routines even if we know they will bring us a better life. Our old belief system drags us back into the familiar. It is hard to overcome and we often experience small setbacks. This is the time to go back and look at your goals. Read your goal statement repeatedly and remind yourself of what you want and why.”

Just as we choose to hold challenging yoga poses with determination, we can consciously make choices in our daily routines that reflect austerity and self-control.

This might involve setting specific goals and consistently working towards them, whether it's in our professional endeavours, health and fitness, or personal development.

Practising Tapas means resisting the need for instant gratification and making decisions that align with our long-term well-being. It encourages us to persevere through difficulties, develop healthy routines, and stay committed to our aspirations.

Whether it's maintaining regular exercise, managing our budgets, or making choices that nourish our mental and emotional health, Tapas helps us build the habit of conscious, yet disciplined living.

Tapas empowers us to face life's challenges with a positive attitude, gratitude, and steadfast determination to grow and evolve. By embracing the principle of Tapas in our daily lives, we foster a more purposeful and fulfilling existence.
